I am Brazilian and lived in the U.S. for ten years. I earned a bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I teach Portuguese and Spanish to private students. I am also a dance performer and teacher of Latin dances, such as samba, forró, zouk, bachata, salsa, and other rhythms. Between dance and language, I have over ten years of teaching experience. I am an enthusiastic and patient teacher. I believe that anyon​e can learn a new language if they are willing to dedicate some effort outside of class time. I teach students at all levels and age. I have found that student-directed teaching is the most effective approach, and I tailor one-to-one instruction based on the student’s needs and interests. For the student who wants to be able to speak everyday Portuguese, I teach conversation, encouraging use of everyday speech, ‘real life’ contexts and pronunciation, over grammatical ‘correctness.’ We study texts and audios about Brazilian daily life and topics that are of interest to the student, and practice conversing. For students who need to develop their reading and writing skills in Portuguese, I work with them on texts emphasizing grammar, structure and more formal vocabulary.

Lesson was great, I can see my speaking is improving. Leo really makes a great effort to understand me, even if I use the wrong word more often than not he can piece it together and show me what I need to do differently. He is always happy to answer my questions about Brazilian culture as well. I am learning a lot with him!

He is a very patient and skilled teacher. We have discovered my learning style for portuguese. He incorporates a great blend of repetition, review and new challenges so that I can keep growing stronger and more confident. We’ve identified my strengths and weaknesses, which also is helping my growth and at a pace that feels good for me to absorb.
